Spend a few minutes googling words that describe the pain. There are many words to choose from (ache, cramping, pins and needles, burning, shooting, stabbing, throbbing, tingling, etc.), so pick the ones that stand out to you. After creating your list, highlight the ones you relate to most. Then, on a separate page, explain how these words best fit how you feel and where you are feeling them. Get specific.

Take five minutes to do this. It can just be a list, write in a circle, whatever makes sense to you. After the five minutes are up, look at what you have written. On a separate page, write about ways these needs are being met or not. Could they be met? Write what that would look like. Is there a focal point to your anxiety or fears? Or is it spread out? Are there individuals or environments that make them worse or better? Are there accessibility issues involved? Do these prevent you from doing things and demotivate you? Do you have a self-care routine in place? If not, what would self-care look like to you? How could you apply it to your life?

After you finish writing on the second page, reflect back on both writing pieces. While looking at them, think about how your mental health and physical health connect. This is a critical discussion to have with yourself and your doctor. 

Lastly, after your initial draft, go back through and tighten up the points. An example of this would be to cross out, “I first felt pain in my leg at my son’s friend’s birthday party.” Instead, try the actual date or general time frame and specify the exact point of pain. You are not a doctor, do not feel pressured to write or talk in the lingo of a doctor. It’s okay to just say “the spot 2 inches above my ankle.”

Also, it’s essential to always have a list of up-to-date medications you are taking with you when going to the doctor. Make sure to write down the dosages as well. Finally, make sure to have a copy of your vaccine records (Usually, you only need to give your primary or pharmacist vaccine records if they don’t already have them. But now, many others require proof of COVID-19 vaccine, so make sure to either carry your card with you, have a photo or digital downloaded of it, or a copy.)

It might seem overwhelming and daunting to deal with the medical system. It’s easy to give up or put off going, but you deserve to not be in pain. Taking care of yourself is always the first step to everything else. So don’t put it off.
